Plush Hobbes!

Last month, my friend Travis commissioned me to make a larger-than-life Hobbes for his Halloween costume! He specifically wanted this to be the 'stuffed' version that other characters see, not the live tiger version Calvin sees.

I usually begin by making a full size 3D paper model, then take it apart (carefully) and use as a pattern.

I needed a BIG sheet of striped fabric, so I cut strips of black and orange fabric & sewed them together.

I cut out the back and belly pieces, and sewed them together.

I was worried about making a mistake with the placement of his nose and stripes on his face so, I decided not to use the sewing machine and opted to do it by hand. I found the perfect OVAL black buttons for his eyes online! YAY!

Making the arms and legs now...YAY, sewing more striped fabric sheets (this was the most boring part.) I sewed together orange and black strips, but added a white strip on the end for the paw parts.

Cut, stuffed and attached to the body.

For the legs, I didn't want to make the same rounded paw nubs I made on the arms, but flat, oval bases.

I stuffed the body with poly fill as well as a little bit of poly pellets to give him a semi-floppy feel. I then gathered up the top of the neck area before attaching the head.

Here he is! Homage to Bill Watterson.
I made his scarf out of velveteen fabric, but I wish it was made of wool - I didn't have any on hand. I loved him so much, it was difficult handing him over. I am however, making one for Dev.

Here's Calvin & Hobbes!
Trav was an awesome Calvin. Blond spiky hair and all!
Trav and I decided on an art trade for him!
(WHERE is my painting Trav? I'm still waiting)

**2009 UPDATE**
Thank you to everyone for their emails, compliments and inquiries! I appreciate all your kind words. I also wanted people to know I won't be sewing anymore stuffed Hobbes out of respect to Bill Watterson (he was against merchandising his work). I wouldn't feel right about making $ from his work. Thank you for understanding.

Even though it was raining, it was just so beautiful outside this afternoon. I had to take a few pics of our trees...

LC Illustration Friday : Thundercats!

Okay, I never really watched the Thundercats, so I had to do a little digging around. I came across this little lady. Luna:

She is two and a half feet tall and the leader of the evil group known as the Lunatacs. I misread her decription as a fast yet idiotic creature with a crippled body, but apparently they were describing the creature that carries her around. So anyways...

It's the Cazy Old lady from the McCain rally!

LC Illustration Friday : He-Man!

We started our own Illo Fridays here @ LCannon a couple weeks ago! I've been too busy or distracted to participate, but this week is He-Man, so I couldn't resist. But, switcharoo, flip-flap-floo, here is an homage to Skeletor... heh.

The extended version. HA! If only....

STUMPYMUNCHIES!

Hey Everybody!
I LOVE to cook and bake, so I decided to start a sub-blog called StumpyMunchies!
It will be a nice way to keep track of some of the dishes and treats I've been trying. Please take a peak when you have a chance. I have a temporary text link (just under my Etsy widget) but, I'll be dropping in a pic button soon - to hopefully make it more enticing! (p.s. don't forget to visit here too!)

Illustration Friday : Memories

So this week's topic is Memories and the first thing that popped into my head was Alzheimers. This disease runs in my family, and it is something I worry about ... A LOT. I was going to do and illo related to that, but...

The other night, I bought a scale. I haven't owned of those in years. Man, probably 10 years? So, anyways, Dev was jokin' with me askin' what I weighed... "are you... 210, 220?... oh, you can't buy that jacket, it won't fit you..." AHhhh!!!! (silent tears) But, he has the right to tease. I can't fit my jeans anymore, and I've put on.. a good 15+. I can't call it the "freshman15", but more like... middleaged15? (again, silent tears) It didn't sound like a lot to me, but if you think about it, it's kinda like i've been hauling around a bowling ball (or two). Whoa.

So, here's my mornin' sketch. Memories of when I was thinner.. and could fit my jeans. ha.

Art For Change!

Hey Everybody! Man, it's been months since my last post - I need to to better on this, or no one will come visit me anymore. Sad days.

The latest: I am participating in a local group artshow called Art For Change, and happily, with a bunch of friends! The event asked 50 artists to donate a piece of work and 50 patrons to raise money towards the Barack Obama campaign! Our friend James also donated his time to DJ the event! NICE!

Here is what I donated. It's a clock made of layered, cut basswood & painted with acryla-gouche and cellpaints. I glued one of the wooden dollar bills to the second hand so it looks like it's flying around.

Thursday, August 21st from 7-9pm
1109 Elliott Avenue West, Seattle, WA
The event is an R.S.V.P/Invite only event, so if you are interested in attending, please email them!

Illustration Friday : Electricity

Hey Everybody!

This week's Illo topic stump'd me at first! My creative juices were bone dry....no images popped into my head at all. It took a while... BAH! I almost attempted to do a take on the 'lightning' guy from Big Trouble in Little China, but ended up doing this stumpydude getting zapped in an electric chair.

Here ya go! Krispy Kitty.

Illustration Friday : Seed

"This Starseed is No Good."

Skeletor was duped! Poor little guy is left holdin' a fake. HA!

A couple months ago, I tried to paint a similar piece for the Saturday Morning Cartoons show on this funky little wooden plaque, but it turned out way too dark and just plain poorly executed. Booo. What a waste of a nice piece of wood. I've been wanting to re-do the piece for some time, so happily, this week's Illo topic game me a boost - I decided to do it up digitally this time around... still dark, but hopefully not as crappy(?)

Hey... don't you think the voice of The Monarch from the Venture Bros. sounds vaguely like Skeletor? Is it just me?

Illustration Friday : Wrinkles

Hey Everybody!

I've been neglecting my blog (what's new), but a miracle happened and I actually did this week's Illo topic! Wrinkles! I have this sick facination with plastic surgery so I wanted to something along those lines. Ahhh, Botox! I originally started working on a generic wrinkled face, but it somehow morphed into Ben Grimm, The Thing. Okay, I know, he's not wrinkled, he's rock - which Dev gave me crap about. So, I made a new one, YODA! All plumped and juiced up.

Here ya go.

A couple folks asked to see the Ben Grimm version...
here he is! Yeah, it doesn't fit 'wrinkles' more like 'cracks' heh.

STUMPYFRIENDS!

Hey Everybody!

A BIG THANKS to everyone who was able to make it out to the OUCH MY EYE, Saturday Mornings group artshow last weekend! It was a really good turnout and man, there were a lot of cool pieces. If you can make it out, the show will be up for another week, from 7-9pm on weekdays only.

Lawrence took a bunch of pics from the show! Check them out HERE.

Here is my take on the SuperFriends! A few of you have asked... "Who the hell is that dude on the end at the far right?" That is Marvin - the SuperFriends era just prior to the addition of the Wonder Twins. I tried to make prints of this, but because it is a dimensional piece, it was a bit tricky, and ended up looking like crap. I'm going to try and find another means to get this going, so at some point, I will have some prints available at my Etsyshop. Cheers!
